In this familial disorder the polyps are more generally distributed throughout the gastrointes­tinal tract and are associated with characteristic mucocutaneous pigmentation, especially in the buccal mucosa, the lips, the soles of the feet, and the dorsum of the hands (see Fig. 41-3). The po­lyps are hamartomas rather than adenomas and therefore have a much lower incidence of neo­plastic transformation, although this complica­tion may occur, especially in the small intestine.
