Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome
In this familial disorder the polyps are more generally distributed throughout the gastrointesÂtinal tract and are associated with characteristic mucocutaneous pigmentation, especially in the buccal mucosa, the lips, the soles of the feet, and the dorsum of the hands (see Fig. 41-3). The poÂlyps are hamartomas rather than adenomas and therefore have a much lower incidence of neoÂplastic transformation, although this complicaÂtion may occur, especially in the small intestine.
